Del Recalls Special Moments

Del says, “I love the memories of walking along a north and south road in front of my grandparents house in SE Nebraska. It was such a peaceful, quiet black dirt road with many ruts in it. The only sounds I might hear would be the distant ‘Johnny Popper’. That was a John Deer Tractor having only one cylinder the size of a five-gallon bucket. You would hear from it a ‘pop, pop, pop, or slowing down a ‘pop     pop      pop’ and when it speeded up it would be ‘poppoppoppop’. Then I might hear the sound of the hog feeders clapping. The feeders were designed with metal lids that lifted. The hogs would take their snouts and lift the lid to get their feed and when they pulled their snouts out the lid would clap down again and leave the sound of a clap, clap, clap, clap. Occasionally, I would hear the song of an eastern meadowlark perched on a fence post. I could feel a warm gentle soft breeze. (These are memories recorded from the late 1930’s, and as I was older I would walk there again and re-live those same memories as late as 1945.)  My Grandparents were Christian Waltke of Pickerell near Beatrice, Nebraska. He married Anna Franzen.

Christian J. Waltke history as told by his grandson Delmar Leroy Carstens in 2003.

Christian WALTKE; b. 1864

Name: Chris Waltke

Annie Waltke Logan, Gage, Nebraska about 1868 Germany White Wife
Elizabeth Waltke Logan, Gage, Nebraska abt 1900 Nebraska White Daughter
and Step daughter, Mabel Christwi........? Gertrude, Meinert, Anna, Johann/John, Ella, (Altja) Albie and mother-in-law, Gertrude FRANZEN.
Chris emigrated with his brother Fred through Baltimore on March 24 1889 on the ship Weser.  Apparently, Fred stowed away.  Not sure about Christian.  I've ordered the ship's manifest to check it out. Christian did not serve in the army. He left Germany to avoid that and was a
stow away on a ship of which we do not know.

Christian Janssen Waltke arrived in Baltimore on March 24 1889 on the ship Weser.
Wilhelm Waltke arrived in Baltimore on May 23, 1890 on the ship Munchen.
(No information on Fred's immigration.  He most likely stowed away.) At 21 years old all German boys were drafted for at least three years.  I think Chris served his three years since he emigrated at age 24.  I think he stowed Fred with him since there is no record of his immigration.  Fred would've been 18 then which would've made it illegal for him to emigrate without having served. signed John Williams

Chris and Anna Franzen married and had 5 children.

Del writes to John Williams who is doing a book on family history.

"As for heirlooms, I only have knowledge of a trunk. I remember seeing it only a few times as a child.  Of its origins, I do not know. I only know that it was passed on to Uncle Meinert Waltke (son), and after his death, it remained in their house.  Later on, Laverne, (Meinert’s son) sold it to obtain money for his alcohol needs.  I do remember Don Eggert being very distraught over this famous little incident.
As mentioned earlier, I do have Christian J’s Certificate of Citizenship hanging on our wall.  It was passed on to me by my mother (Altje, or Ella).  Obviously, this item didn’t come from Germany.  The little remaining from the estate of Christian J, was sold when the house was finally dismantled for nothing short of a pittance.  It simply wasn’t worth anything."

 Descendants:

They had 6 children  Elizabeth, Gertrude, Meinert, Atja(Ella) my mother, John and Anna. They raised another girl. Unknown origin.

Mabel came to live with them and nobody knew where she came from.
It is thought it may have been from Anna Franzen's  first husband who threw her off a bridge and left her for dead. She survived after reaching a barn with a haystack.
Mother tells how one day someone came to their house and dropped off this little girl named Mabel. She was a redhead and mother never liked her. She was never picked up again by anyone. Mother and her sisters didn't know anything about her past, but were very much aware that thier mother took good care of her and treated her special. This made the other girls jealous.  Mabel married a farmer and moved to McCook, Nebraska and had 11 or 12 children as the story goes.

1. Anna married  Henry Eggert.  No children  She died very young (in her 30's) and the family never seemed to recover from her loss. They spoke of her as being almost perfect. She treated everyone so well.

5. And then there was Mabel Chris..- Sounds to us like she was raised as one of the Family but never spoken of as such.

6. John Waltke Stayed with his parents and tended the farm. He died in 1948 (car accident) caused by his drinking. Grandmother Waltke stayed with  her daughters on a rotating basis as she was unable to be alone again. At the time of his accident she was very ill and hospitalized.
